Throwing Techniques

A throw, in Jiu Jitsu, is a grappling technique that involves off-balancing or lifting an opponent, and throwing them to the ground, in Japanese throws are referred to as nage-waza, "throwing technique".

Throwing techniques can be divided into six categories, these are -

  • Hand techniques
  • Leg techniques
  • Hip techniques
  • Shoulder techniques
  • Sacrifice techniques

In training, throwing techniques are practised on safety matting to help reduce the possibility of injury. But in a self defence situation a throw can be used to devastating effect when performed at full speed on a hard floor.

A throw can be used as a complete technique in itself, or it can be used to take an opponent to the ground where they can be more easily controlled with other techniques.
